The group is known for its high-pressure tactics in proselytizing, emphasis on deliverance of the demon-possessed, and fundraising, as well as its aggressive work in broadcasting and politics. Also controversial are its syncretistic use of elements drawn from Roman Catholicism and Umbanda spiritism.

CFAR Brazil director Paulo Romeiro, a longtime observer, says that he no longer considers the Igreja Universal an evangelical denomination; instead, it is a "pseudo-Pentecostal" church focused primarily on raising money. A major splinter group, the Igreja Mundial do Poder de Deus, is growing rapidly.
